Temple of City of God
Temple of City of God, near to the Kun lam Temple of the Avenida de Coronel Mesquita, is the only temple of local god of land, constructed in 34th year of Guanxu Reign of the late Qing Dynasty (1908).
The main gods of the temple are City God, His Royal Highness Zhangwangye and Hung Seng.
According to the inscription of the tablet erected in the 34th year of Guanxu Reign, it is said. "The former imperial envoy Zhang Zhidong of Guangdong once presented a memorial to emperor to praise the countrymen of Mong Ha for their insistence on justice, when the current political situation was not changed; however when it comes to the autumn of the year of Wuxu, I am astonished to find that foreigners have already lived together with Chinese. So there is no alternative but to seek help to god to dominate their fates."
The construction of the City God Temple was greatly related with the situation do of Macao in the late Qing Dynasty. At that time, Portuguese had occupied the farmland outside the city gradually and the village Mong Ha was also on the verge of destruction.
In name of collecting fee of street lamps, the Portuguese entered the village, but encountered the resistance of the countrymen.
Zhang Zhidong, governor of Guangdong and Guangxi of the time, presented a memorial to emperor to praise the countrymen for their behaviour of defending their homeland. At the side of the temple there is an arbour named Arbour of Fulfilled Wish, which is said to be the place where the local militia used to drill.
The temple is dedicated to City God, His Royal Highness Zhangwangye (Zhang Zhidong) and God of Water Hung Seng. It is the place where people beg gods to end disputes.
