Macau Security Forces Museum
The Macau Security Forces Museum was built in order to commemorate the reliant and dependable security force of Macau.
This museum also stands for the wars that Macau has fought in the past for land. The Macau Security Forces Museum is located at the back of the Military Club in Macau. It's quite difficult to find because it's just a small museum, and it's also the lobby of the Public Security Forces Bureau of Macau. So, if you are just "in the area," you should certainly visit the Macau Security Forces Museum although there isn't much to see.
There is a rich exhibition inside the Macau Security Forces Museum. This exhibition includes valuable military and police objects such as guns, cannons, communication equipment, old photos and pictures of the Public Security Forces of Macau and fine models of the Public Security Forces Bureau.
To add to the museum's objective, the Macau Security Forces Museum is also in remembrance of the former Public Security Force of Macau which is now called the Macau Security Forces Management Bureau (DSFSM).
The governing body and organizer of the Macau Security Forces Museum is the Macau Security Forces Management Bureau (DSFSM). The Macau Security Forces Management Bureau was founded on the 28th of January in 19991. Their main objective was to take over the functions of the former Public Security Forces Headquarters of Macau. On the 29th of April in 2002, the Macau Special Administrative Region Government reformed the internal organization of DSFSM for it to operate as a new structure.
What's interesting about the Macau Security Forces Museum is the building and foundation in which it is built. That building used to be the San Francisco Barracks or fortress during the time of Governor José Francisco do Amaral.
The San Francisco Fortress is a vast, imposing building built from the foundations of the former San Francisco monastery. The Governor was also responsible for the construction of San Francisco Fortress which stands where the old fortress was. The barracks were rebuilt in 1937.
This fortress was built to protect Macau from the threat of naval attacks and was the front line of defense against any enemy fleets. The other fortresses were San Pedro, Our Lady of Bomparto, and San Tiago of Barra. The armament covered the channel between the Peninsula of Macau and Taipa Island with guns. The fortress was altered after 1715.
San Francisco Fortress which was built in 1864 was more evenly shaped with two circular bastions. The fortress was obviously built as protection against naval attack. Moreover, there was a small magazine and a sentry-box, an underground passageway linking the fortress to the 1st of December Battery was made when the latter was built in 1872 but it was destroyed with the land reclamation work which began in 1921.
