The Museum of Taipa and Colone History was formerly the building of the former Island Council Building. The Portuguese-style building was constructed way back in the 1920s according to the earliest documents attainable.
The Island Council Building served as the administrative center of the island's government and it played an important role in the development of the island. It was called "Yamen" in the past, which is commonly known as the government office.

The Museum of Taipa and Coloane History itself is an integral part of the history of Coloane and Taipa, and the Macau Special Administrative Region government has categorized it as a building of architectural and artistic value.

The exhibits inside the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History are in two floors which consist of nine exhibition rooms, a video presentation area and of course, a souvenir shop.

The planning and preparation process for the construction of the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History were long and rigorous processes.

Until 2004, excavations under the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History and in other places in the islands were still being executed because of the endless search for newly found ancient relics and artifacts that might be of great contribution to the islands.
Conversely, basic preparations for exhibitions were carried out in 2005.
The renovation was completed only in March 2006.
The final setting of exhibits and the preparation for the opening ceremony were then ready for the official opening of the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History on May 7, 2006.
