Macau Military Club
The Military Club is a neo-classical Portuguese building located between S Francisco Garden and the S Francisco Barracks. This place was originally located along the sea shore but now reclaimation has left it in the middle of the city.

The Military Club building was the site of the 16th century convent of Franciscan monks called Our Lady of the Angels Convent 'Nossa Senhora dos Anjos'.
The present neo-classical building was designed by the Baron of Cercal in 1870. The building was originally built to provide social facilities and entertainment to the Portuguese soldiers. Today it is a private club although the Portuguese restaurant is open to the public.

«Single-floor urban property, with 13 windows, 6 doors opening to the verandahs and 2 service doors, totaling two thousand two hundred and eleven Portuguese square “covados”, located in Rua da Praia Grande, between the garden S. Francisco’s Fortress, parish of Sé , allocated a postal number; North boundary – the quad of the Front Battalion Headquarters; South boundary – public street; East boundary – S. Francisco Fortress; West boundary – public garden. This building had no previous owner, having been built by its current proprietors. I calculated the value of this property based both on the document submitted and on the submittor’s declaration, to be worth twelve thousand patacas and its annual net worth seven hundred patacas». (Property’s Registrar in 1872)
The Military Club used to be the Gremio ....
" The 1870 generation – know as the Defeated of Life – founded the Gremio (…) to provide a means of education and recreation to members. Firstly, education, then recreation.
For that purpose, the 70s generation put together a extraordinary library that included first editions of works by Camilo, Eca, Antero, Ramalho, Junqueiro, Enes and so many others. "

Then came the 1953 generation who began by changing the name (of the institution): the child who, in 1870, was baptized with the name "Grémio" would, after 83 years, be renamed "Clube". It seems that this was due to the fact that the word “grémio” began to stink like “revolutionary parching”.
This change reflects the mode of thought of 1953: the Club’s objectives are to provide recreation and education. First recreation; then education».

Entry Hall

Staircase to 2nd Level to the Honor Hall, Laddres, Library. The lower stairs leads to the Pub and other rooms.

The the stately pink-and-white military club was restored in 1995 and reopened as a restaurant. Its a very nice place to eat. Not cheap but not over the top either. The food is mainly Portuguese. And of course an extensive Portuguese wine list.
As per Fodors review
"The languid old-world atmosphere perfectly complements the extensive list of traditional Portuguese dishes offered, such as bacalhau dourado ("golden cod," a specialty of fried cod and potatoes), African chicken, andarroz de marisco (flavored rice and seafood). Be sure to leave room for dessert—the Portuguese platter includes almond cake, sponge cake, and egg pudding, or go for warm chestnut tart or coconut ice cream with caramelized pineapple. For those with less of a sweet tooth, try the Portuguese cheddar cheese."
