Macau Museum of Art
One of the premier attractions of Macau is the Macau Museum of Art. This museum showcases the cultural and artistic side of Macau, underneath the casinos and the fast-paced way of living.
The Macau Museum of Art is unique not because of its location on the reclaimed land of Macau but because it is the only art museum in Macau. Also, it provides the largest space in Macau that is dedicated to the visual arts.
The Macau Museum of Art is under the management of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau of Macau and as inaugurated on the 19th of March in 1999. The artistic works and cultural artifacts that are featured in the Macau Museum of Art include Chinese Calligraphy and Paintings, Seals, Ceramics, Copperwares, Western paintings, Contemporary Arts, Photography artworks, and other significant collections.
The Macau Museum of Art is indeed very big and a strategic navigation is required in order to make most of the time. There are five floors in the museum and seven exhibition galleries that are different from one another.
On the second and third floor, there is a gallery for exhibitions of various themes, and it displays collections of artists from China or from other countries. Also on the third floor is the Gallery of Historical Pictures where export-oriented Western paintings and European prints of the Macau scenery are on exhibit.
The Gallery of Chinese Calligraphy and Paintings, and Gallery of Chinese Ceramics are located on the fourth floor, where mainly Chinese Calligraphy, Paintings, and Shiwan Ceramics of Canton are exhibited.
Moreover, the Macau Museum of Art's auditorium is located on the first floor, which has a capacity of more than 100 persons. Also on the first floor is a gallery that is exclusively for artworks of the Museum, overseas/foreign artists, and contemporary artists in Macau.
The Macau Museum of Art also has a library with many art-related books, and provides free access to use the audio facilities and internet services. The library is also equipped with visual facilities for over 400 international films in its visual room.
The objective of the organization in charge of the Macau Museum of Art is not just to exhibit and display random works of art, but to display a renowned taste of both Asian and Western characteristics. Of course, these works of art are the products of individuals who have the specialty of traditional oriental culture merged with the artistic flavor of the West.
The Macau Museum of Art wasn't built just for the sake of showing off the artistic prowess of the artists in Macau. It wasn't built just to exhibit the paintings of renowned painters from China and from all other parts of the world.
The Macau Museum of Art is to encourage people, residents of Macau especially, to take part in the history of Macau and to be involved in the government's attempt to make Macau, truly, the "Gateway to the West/East."
