Historical Paintings of Macau in the 19th Century
16 Jun 2009 to 14 Mar 2010
Macau was the Chinese city through which European art was introduced to China, with a large number of Western painters arriving in the city during the mid-18th and mid-19th Century. They contributed a significant record of community life in addition to painting the landscape of Macau and its neighbouring region.
This exhibition features 74 historical paintings from the collection of Macau Museum of Art by renowned Western artists such as George Chinnery and Marciano Antonio Baptista. Visitors can trace the highly representative historic process of 'Western art transmitted to the East' in the mutual influences of painting skills that passed between George Chinnery and his student Lamqua alias Kwan Kiu Cheong. The works on display clearly show how a Chinese painter learned advanced painting techniques from a Western master, particularly in the use of light, shade, and composition.

Exhibition of the Fine Arts Collection from MAM
Macau is a metaphor for the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. Upon arriving in Macau in early 1825, British painter George Chinnery introduced watercolour painting, which was venerated in Britain, contributing greatly to the promotion of this genre and making it the mainstream painting of Macau. In recent years, Macau moved into an era of urban modernisation, which led to new concepts and creative impetus in the development of art in the territory. Chinese and Western cultures together inspired the creation of art in Macau.
The exhibition showcases over one hundred works of art from Macau, including Chinese paintings, watercolours, oil paintings and prints etc. Some of these works are selected in the exhibition 'Confluence: Collection from the Macau Museum of Art' held in Beijing during March this year.

In Love with the Macanese - A Photograph Exhibition
The history of the Macanese dates back to the 16th Century. At the time, the Portuguese had a strong overseas presence and frequently explored new sea routes to the East. Portuguese men married and had children with the locals, and eventually settled in Macau. Their offspring became the early Macanese of Macau.
Macanese living habits, education, customs and religious beliefs are all meticulously documented in this photographic exhibition, illustrating the past while raising the understanding of Macanese culture through captions. The exhibition fittingly takes place in the House of the Islands, a typical historic Portuguese residence in a leafy district of Taipa.

It's A Wonderful Place
Listening to the song 'It's A Wonderful Place' - accompanied by Chinese and Western musical instruments, sung by male, female and children's voices in both Mandarin and English - and I'm instantly transported to Macau, the archetypal blend of East and West. This song is one of the three to win first prize in the local 'Song of Macau Lyrics Competition'.
One of the other songs which won first prize is 'Song of Macau' - which became the celebration theme song of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macau SAR; the third winning song -'Prosperous Lotus' - is the theme song of China Central Television (CCTV) and the Macau SAR Government, who jointly produced the large-scale TV documentary 'Macau 10 Years'.
In the year of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macau SAR, these songs are particularly poignant, ushering in a new generation who wholeheartedly want to promote their city to the world. They are telling Macau's story in their songs, interlacing their melodies with rich spiritual charm and a belief in the future.
If you're like me, and eager to learn more about Macau's fascinating culture, you must visit the Chinese Cultural Exchange Association website for a free download of 'A Wonderful Place' and the other inspiring songs from the competition . . . while enjoying the social, physical and spiritual landscape of the territory in this entrancing music video.

Taipa Flea Market
24 Jan to 20 Jun
Despite the recent surge of building and expansion of infrastructure in Taipa, this small island has managed to retain its village charm in the narrow streets and lanes where the Chinese and Portuguese have lived together so harmoniously for centuries. It's also become a magnet for local collectors looking for something out of the ordinary into the bargain!
Visitors regularly flock to the Sunday Taipa Flea Market between Rua do Cunha and Rua de Regedor in the heart of the old village in search of bric-a-brac, mementos, toys and souvenirs . . . and the district also hosts a street show.
Time: Every Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Venue: Bombeiros Square, Taipa
Organizer: Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau
Telephone enquiries for Taipa Flea Market: (853) 2833 7676
Telephone enquiries for Street Show: (853) 8988 4100
