Handover Gifts Museum of Macau
To commemorate the handover of Macau to the People's Republic of China, the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau was built.
The Macau Special Administrative Region was established in 1999, and to celebrate this milestone occasion the 32 provinces, Autonomous Regions, Municipalities and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China bestowed blessings and auspicious gifts to Macau a decade ago. The gifts reflect the nation's unique artistic regional styles and serve as a symbol of the thriving prosperity of the motherland.
The Handover Gifts Museum of Macau is situated on the site of the Macau handover ceremony of the Sino-Portuguese Governments. Why not pop along to this permanent exhibition for an insightful 'tour' of the unique history of the territory, while admiring some unique works of art?
Museum Inauguration
The inauguration of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau on the 5th anniversary of the handover is also indeed significant and momentous especially for Macau's modern history.
This museum is of great significance to the residents of Macau, as well as the Portuguese and the Mainland Chinese because not only does it remember the handover of Macau from Portugal but it also symbolizes the friendship between China and Portugal.
Macao was once called Hao Jing and was a subordinate of Xiangshan County in the Ming Qing Dynasty. In the mid-sixteenth century, Portuguese travelers arrived from the east and initially used Macao as a place to dry their goods because of its prime and convenient location.
After the opium war, the Portuguese saw the incapability of the Qing Dynasty Government and gradually colonized the region. After the establishment of The People's Republic of China, the Central Government strived for the reunification of China's lost territories.
It is general knowledge for all the Chinese and for all the tourists that come to visit that Macau was colonized by Portugal and was only returned backed to the People's Republic of China in 1999.
To celebrate the return of Macau to the People's Republic of China, a Handover Ceremony was conducted on the 20th of December in 1999. The Central Government of the People's Republic of China implemented a "one country, two systems" policy in Macau and the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region marks a new era in Macau's history.
Museum Location
The Handover Gifts Museum of Macau is located next to the Macau Cultural Center in the Macau peninsula. It can be easily located because the Macau Cultural Center has a very distinct structure and it is located on the reclaimed part of the island of Macau. The location of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau is also the area that was used in the Handover Ceremony in December of 1999, so the location serves a double purpose.
When you enter the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau, you will immediately feel the atmosphere of the independence of Macau from Portugal. There are several documents, and photographs inside the Handover Gifts Museum that pertain to the handover ceremony.
The Handover Gifts Museum of Macau is composed of three floors. On the first floor, you will find the lobby and the entrance to the museum. Also located on the first floor are the Museum's administrative offices.
On the second floor is the handover gifts exhibition gallery, together with the exhibition gallery. It is on this floor where the important memorabilia and treasures of the Handover Ceremony can be seen on display. On the third floor lies a multi-purpose auditorium for exhibitions or functions.
The handover gifts exhibition gallery basically showcases gifts that were presented by the State Council of the People's Republic of China, its country-wide provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The special exhibition gallery will be used to hold different exhibits, which are mainly themed on the local culture and history of Macau.
For such a small country and population density as Macau has, it has a very rich and colorful history. When you go and visit Macau and if you are into exploring its culture and historical nature, you should finally check out the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau in order to learn more about the colonization of Portugal and the handover to China.
