Today all celebrations are concentrated on the famous Dragon Boat Races, which in Macau takes place on the . Many local teams and foreign teams take part in this colourful event.

The festival is among the fastest growing team water sports in Macau. Hong Kong Dragon Boat Races are traditionally held during the festival and it's the only sport to be celebrated as National Holiday.

The Macau Tourist Board is promoting the sports worldwide. The sport is now recognized internationally with governing bodies and a range of racing distances from 200m sprints to 1000km epics like the Three Gorges Dam Rally through the Hubei province of China.

There are several organizations and clubs where you can join the action but if you're happy to stay on dry land watching is a big rush too and you'll fast become a fan.

The Macau Dragon Boat Races take place in Nam Van Lakes, usually in June. Fiercely competitive teams, including international teams, train up for months ahead of the event.

Go watch and a dmire the elaborately carved and dressed dragon boats. Enjoy the drum-thumping excitement of the final push to the finishing line. Or get in on action by joining a team.
